Building Strong Foundations — for Structures and for Mental Health

Celebrating World Laughter Day and Mental Health Awareness Month

At SkyHook Cranes, a small, family-owned crane company based right here in Surprise, Arizona, we know a thing or two about heavy lifting — both on the job site and sometimes, in life.

Today, on World Laughter Day and the first day of Mental Health Awareness Month, we wanted to take a moment to talk about something even more important than the steel beams we hoist into the sky: the strength of our mental health.

Working in the crane and construction industry, we face tough days. Long hours, challenging projects, deadlines, and the weight (literally!) of responsibility can take a toll. That’s why it’s crucial — for our team, our families, and our community — to make mental health a priority.

Laughter: The Best “Rigging” for Tough Days

World Laughter Day reminds us how powerful a simple laugh can be. It’s not just about feeling good for a moment — laughter actually reduces stress hormones, boosts endorphins, and strengthens social bonds. Whether we’re sharing a joke over lunch or telling funny crane stories from the field (trust us, there are plenty!), we’ve found that laughter keeps morale high and relationships strong.

Just like we double-check our rigging to ensure the safety of every lift, we double-check with each other to make sure no one is carrying more emotional weight than they should alone.

Mental Health Matters — in Every Industry

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, and we believe mental health is just as important as physical safety. In a job where precision, attention, and teamwork are critical, clear minds and open conversations are vital.

We encourage our team to:

  • Talk it out: Whether it’s a tough day or a tough season, opening up is the first lift toward healing.
  • Look out for one another: Just like we have spotters on the ground, we can be spotters for each other emotionally.
  • Take breaks: Mental fatigue can be just as dangerous as physical fatigue. It’s okay to pause, reset, and laugh a little.
  • Ask for help: Just like you’d call for a bigger crane if you’re overloaded, there’s strength in reaching out for support when you need it.

A Message to Our Community

To all the hardworking folks — whether you’re in construction, healthcare, education, retail, or raising a family — you are not alone. This month (and every month), we stand with you in recognizing the importance of mental health. And today, we invite you to laugh, smile, and share a moment of joy with someone.

Together, let’s build strong foundations not just in our cities, but in our hearts and minds too.

Stay safe, lift carefully, and don’t forget to laugh along the way!
