Lifting Stories Higher: Celebrating World Book Day from the Cab of a Crane

At SkyHook Crane, we spend most of our days lifting heavy loads and helping Arizona’s construction projects reach new heights—but today, we’re pausing for a different kind of lift: the kind that comes from turning the pages of a great book. In honor of World Book Day, we’re swapping steel beams for stories and celebrating the power of reading, imagination, and learning.

Why World Book Day Matters—Even to a Crane Company

You might be thinking, “What do cranes have to do with books?” More than you’d think!

Every towering skyscraper, bustling school campus, or new home begins with a blueprint—a vision. That vision often starts with an idea, and ideas are born from learning. Books are some of the most powerful tools out there for sparking curiosity, creativity, and knowledge—just like cranes are some of the most powerful tools for building the future.

Stories from the Sky: What Our Operators Read

When you’re 200 feet in the air with a view most people only dream of, it gives you time to think. Our crane operators are often avid readers (or audiobook listeners) in their off hours. Here are a few books our team recommends for anyone who loves building, engineering, or just a good story:

  • “The Crane Boys” by James DeVita – A fictional tale inspired by construction and brotherhood.
  • “The Art of Construction” by Mario Salvadori – A fascinating look at how architecture and engineering come together.
  • “Skyfaring” by Mark Vanhoenacker – A pilot’s perspective, but the love of being above it all is something our crane operators relate to.

Building a Culture of Learning

Just like we believe in safety and precision on every job site, we believe in building a strong foundation at home and in our communities. That’s why we encourage our team and their families to keep reading. Whether it’s bedtime stories with their kids or brushing up on the latest rigging standards, reading keeps us sharp—on the ground and in the cab.

How You Can Celebrate World Book Day with Us

  • Donate a children’s book to a local school or library.
  • Read to your kids—or let them read to you.
  • Share your favorite construction-related book with us on social media using #[YourCompanyNameReads].

At SkyHook Cranes, we’re proud to lift Arizona’s biggest projects—and on World Book Day, we’re just as proud to help lift minds and imaginations, one book at a time.
