At our crane company here in Phoenix, Arizona, we know a thing or two about working under the blazing desert sun. When temperatures soar past 110°F, operating cranes, managing rigging, and overseeing job sites isn’t just about strength and skill — it’s about smart safety, too. And at the top of the list? Staying hydrated.
Why Hydration Is Critical on a Crane Site
Cranes and construction sites demand precision, focus, and alertness. Dehydration can quickly impair reaction time and decision-making — two things you can’t afford to risk when lifting heavy loads or managing critical equipment. Whether you’re a crane operator, ground crew, or site supervisor, water is your most important tool.
Arizona Heat Is No Joke
In Phoenix, it’s common for summer temps to reach well into the triple digits, especially from June through September. Factor in reflective surfaces, asphalt, and machinery heat, and your body is working overtime. Heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke can sneak up fast.
Hydration Tips for Crane Crews (and All Outdoor Workers)
Here are some field-tested tips our crane crews follow to stay safe and sharp on the job:
1. Start Hydrating Before You Clock In
Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Drink 16-20 ounces of water when you wake up, and keep sipping throughout the day.
2. Avoid Energy Drinks
They might seem like a good idea for an energy boost, but they can dehydrate you faster. Stick with water or electrolyte drinks (especially those low in sugar).
3. Use a Refillable Water Jug
Most of our crews carry a one-gallon jug to track their intake. It’s easy to refill and cuts down on plastic waste too.
4. Take Shade Breaks
Even five minutes in the shade can cool your core temperature. We encourage scheduled hydration and shade breaks throughout the day — especially in the afternoon.
5. Watch Out for Each Other
If a crew member seems dizzy, confused, or stops sweating, it could be heat stroke. Get them help immediately.
Our Commitment to Safety
As a family-owned crane company serving Phoenix and the surrounding areas, we prioritize safety above all. Hydration and heat safety aren’t just policies — they’re habits we live by. We take pride in keeping our team safe, sharp, and ready to lift whatever the day brings.
Whether you’re working on a residential build or a major commercial project, remember: the best lift is a safe one — and that starts with staying hydrated.
